Markham Avenue Demolition Begins

Demolition-begins

The redevelopment of the Markham Avenue Estate is one step closer with demolition of the 1950’s concrete walk-up flats commencing.

The estate will become home to around 240 units, including 62 public housing units.

By the middle of the 2015 the Estate was home to only a handful of tenants.  One tenant who spoke to the media stated that she was initially told the housing was transitional but she lived at the Estate for six years.

During that time her unit had flooded twice, and many of the families around her moved out and had their windows boarded up. She said “We want them to knock it down and start again. It’s not fair on us, and it’s not fair on the people who live around here.”
